At the height of the COVID-19 crisis, as uncertainty loomed, the exhibition This is Surrealism! by Boijmans Van Beuningen, on view at the Cobra Museum, felt strikingly timely. Opening just a week after the Dutch government imposed national restrictions, the show gained an unexpected and profound relevance.

A timely photo series accompanied the show, featuring young people from Amstelveen and the Randstad as they connected their own “surreal” experiences to works by Dalí, Carel Willink, Paul Delvaux, Man Ray, and René Magritte.
